A POLICEMAN is recovering after being bitten by a dog as he chased an aggressive suspect in Harlington.
He needed stitches after being bitten in the thigh and groin when the man set his dog loose. He remains off work while he recovers.
The incident happened on the Bath Road at 11.44pm on Friday after officers were called to reports of a fight and suspects armed with guns and knives.
Armed polce attended but the suspects had made off. However, one man then returned with a dog and was verbally aggressive towards officers. He was pursued on foot and then loosed the dog.
The man, aged 33, was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm, affray, common assault and having a dangerous dog in public.
He was bailed pending further enquiries.
Chief Supt Pete Gardner, West Area commander, said: “This incident is a stark reminder of the threat faced by police and I’d like to commend the bravery of this officer in dealing with a violent suspect and dog.”
The animal was seized and taken to a police station.
