Two giant snails were found dumped in a Borehamwood park on Halloween.

The RSPCA were called to the town on October 31 after a member of the public came across a brown cardboard box.

The woman saw there were two giant African land snails inside and she decided to take the box home with her before calling the animal rescue charity.

RSPCA animal collection officer Jill Sanders came to Borehamwood to take the snails away.

The snails are currently at a veterinary clinic awaiting a more suitable home.

The discovery of the snails in Borehamwood comes after four giant snails were found dumped in a tank in Hull.

When RSPCA inspector Lucy Green visited the tank, she found it was soaking after heavy rainfall and when she picked up the snails, water was pouring from the shells.

The snails have now recovered and have a new home.

Giant African land snails can reach up to 7.8ins in length and weigh around 32g. They can live up to ten years.

Ms Sanders added: "Giant African land snails are kept as pets but we don’t come across them very often so it’s strange that we’ve rescued six in just a few weeks.

"As with all pets, it’s really important that anyone thinking of taking on a giant snail is aware of what is involved in taking care of them before they bring one home."
