Sir Vince Cable, the former leader of the Liberal Democrats, is stepping down in Twickenham.

He took the seat back from the Conservatives in the 2017 snap-election, winning 52.8 per cent of the vote, but will new face Munira Wilson be able to hold it for the Lib Dems?

The constituency voted 66.68 per cent to remain in the EU referendum, but had traditionally been a Conservative stronghold before Vince Cable took over.

Here are the candidates you can vote for in Twickenham:

Munira Wilson, Liberal Democrat

This Is Local London:

Munira Wilson lives in Whitton with her husband and young family.

She is a former Twickenham councillor, who worked on road safety improvements, tackling crime and anti-social behaviour, and protecting the environment.

Munira currently works as Corporate Affairs Director for a science and technology company leading on Brexit and health policy. She has previously worked for health and children’s charities, as well as the NHS.

She says she is campaigning to stop Brexit and for more investment in public services, including more funding for schools and more police on the streets, as well as urgent action to tackle the climate emergency.

Locally, Munira says she will oppose plans for a third runway at Heathrow and work to hold South Western Railway and Network Rail to account over poor service and inaccessible stations and help to tackle the Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) funding crisis.

Isobel Grant, Conservative.

This Is Local London:

Isobel Grant is a engineer living in West London. She contributed to the infrastructure of the 2012 Olympics, and has served as a local councillor in Ealing.

She has worked as a school governor at Castlebar school for children with learning disabilities for more than nine years and is now a trustee at the international humanitarian charity RedR.

In 2018 she received the Telegraph Top 50 Women in Engineering Award.

She says that studying at St Catherine’s school in Twickenham was a “formative experience,” that helped her to become an engineer.

Her campaign is focused on Crossrail 2 to expand Twickenham’s railway lines and build new stations, creating affordable homes for young families, more jobs, more investment, and shorter commutes.

She also wants to see more investment in police and new powers to reduce crime.

Ranjeev Walia, Labour

This Is Local London:

Ranjeev Walia has lived in Twickenham his whole life, and has been a governor at Trafalgar Infant School and a trustee at the Whitton Community Centre.

He was also a council candidate for Heathfield in 2018, where Labour received their best result in nearly 45 years.

He says his beliefs “have been shaped through the inequalities that he has seen or experienced, growing up, and in his social activism in the Labour Party.”

He says he is campaigning for a “fairer society” after years of austerity and “will represent the views of all residents and businesses and ensure all their voices are heard in in parliament.”

Green Party - no longer standing

Green Party candidate, Richard Bennett, is no longer standing as a consequence of the “unite to remain” pact.
