A community-led cinema is facing closure at the end of the year if it does not get more members.

Screen 25 has been running in South Norwood for the past four years.

It started out as Stanley’s Film Club in 2015 at Stanley Halls which grew from a monthly film club to a weekly event.

It relocated and re-branded as Screen 25 in 2017 and now twice-a-week takes over Harris Academy in Cumberlow Avenue.

Led by creative director Katie Brandwood, there is now an army of more than 30 volunteers which keeps the cinema running.

It runs on Wednesday and Friday evenings and costs  up to £400 a time to put on.  To cover the running costs 45 viewers are needed per screening.

But on Wednesdays Screen 25 audiences average about 23 people.

So now the group of volunteers behind the cinema has introduced a membership scheme from £15 to £50 a month.

If another 60 people sign up to be a bronze, silver or gold ‘Screen 25 Champion’ the cinema should be able to continue running.

Marketing manager Cat Mahmoud said that with Everyman in Crystal Palace and the West Norwood Picturehouse opening demand for Screen 25 had decreased.

She said: “We work very hard on this and we are all passionate about it and our community.

“It has always been a space for us to join together and share experiences, we try to cater to everyone and we hope we can keep running.”

The cinema shows a mix of blockbusters and independent films as well as inviting speakers for question and answer sessions after some of the films.

Tickets for the cinema cost £9 for adults, £7 for concessions and £5 for under 25s.

At some of the screenings there is also food and drink on offer including Walnuts and Honey run by Matthew Simon Grossett and Eli and Pie run by Elisha Ovia who have both supported the cinema since the beginning.

But once-a-month Screen 25 runs pay as you feel screenings which are funded through a grant from the Mayor of London.

It also benefited from a community grant from Croydon Council. This £1,000 goes forwards putting on Family Film Club screenings.

The cinema is supported by South Norwood’s ward councillors who chose to give it £750 from their ward budgets which goes towards volunteer expenses.
