A children's author has visited a Bexley school to present a special award for reading.

Ian MacDonald nominated Northumberland Heath Primary School for The Reading for Pleasure Award run by the Society of Authors.

This is in recognition of their drive to promote a love of reading amongst pupils at school.

Deputy Head, Gail Beale, was the driving force behind initiatives to promote reading.

Ian is seen here opening the exciting new ‘Book Barn’.

This Is Local London:

Ms Beale said: “Ian’s projects with us helped the children to understand the links between being engaged readers and writing for a purpose themselves.

The Book Barn is allowing them the thrill of choosing their own books on their own, with their parents or after chatting with knowledgeable staff. There is a tangible buzz of excitement about reading, “said Mrs. Beale.

Ian was also the school’s Patron of Reading for 2018-19, helping children across the school to become authors too.
