To celebrate black history month a community group is aiming to inspire people with stories of young black success.

The Windrush Community Group Chingford will hold its second free annual culture trail, starting on October 19 and finishing on November 3.

The theme of this year’s trail, hosted across various businesses in Chingford Mount, is “young, gifted and black”.

It consists of a photo and written profile of an inspirational young black person. Each portrait includes a letter which is a clue to a word puzzle people completing the trail solve for a chance to win a prize.

One inspirational individual featured is Eniola Aluko, footballer for England and Juventus, commentator, author and lawyer – she graduated with a first-class degree from Brunel University London.

The trail will also feature rapper, author, journalist and activist, Akala.

Event organisers, Sharon King, Abby Green, and Neil Weeks say they hope the trail will inspire young black people by showing them what impressive young black people have achieved.

They also want to mark black history month in Chingford, to make black residents feel celebrated and included in the community.

Sharon King said: “My mother, who was directly affected by the Windrush scandal, finally received her British citizenship and passport this year, despite travelling to this country on a British passport from Jamaica when she was 9 years old.

“I want the trail to inspire young black people to aim high and recognise and celebrate their potential, particularly in the context of increasing knife crime and negative news reports about their generation.”

Sharon and Abby established the Windrush Community Chingford, last year as a direct response to the Windrush scandal and the “hostile environment” surrounding it.

Abby Green added: “I am proud of what our small community group does and has achieved in a short space of time. It is important to me to live in a community that celebrates everyone for the contribution they make.”

The Windrush Community Group has been award funding by Waltham Forest Council for the event as part of the London Borough of Culture celebrations.

Anyone wishing to take part can pick up a flyer from South Chingford Community Library or one of the participating shops.
