The council has confirmed it is taking action after a group of caravans and vehicles were filmed speeding onto a Twickenham public park and setting up camp.

Footage taken at the time of their arrival in Kneller Gardens, off Meadway, shortly after 3pm yesterday (September 28), appears to show at least six caravans in the park, some of which are seen racing across the green space with other vehicles

One of the clips shows a silver car accelerating across the park, skidding across the grass as it drives towards one of the caravans.

After numerous witnesses and nearby residents reported concerns on social media, the Met Police confirmed last night its officers had attended the camp and were “monitoring the situation”.

Today (September 29), Richmond Council confirmed it had launched the legal process to remove the traveller camp and had now served them notice to leave.

A council spokesman posted on Twitter: “We are aware of travellers on #Kneller Gardens. The Councils enforcement officers have commenced the removal process using our temporary injunction powers, to ensure the illegal travellers leave the site swiftly.”

The Twitter page for Kneller Gardens, run by the Friends of Kneller Gardens, also posted saying they were aware of the incursion.

“We are aware of the recent arrival of numerous caravans and trailers in Kneller Gardens. The police and council are also aware and have visited the site,” the statement read.

As of 2pm at the time of publishing on Sunday, the camp still remains in place.
