Trolleys, a vacuum and even a microwave among the rubbish cleared during Colliers Wood litter picks

Pippa Maslin along with the Merton Green Party organise the event and meet on the last Sunday of every month (except December).

The day starts outside Colliers Tube station at 11am, picking outside the main entrance for Sainsbury's and M&S before they work their way along the Wandle Trail, heading towards Merton Abbey Mills and Deen City Farm.

"We pick for about an hour, take what we have collected to the starting point, and ask Veolia to collect it," Ms Maslin said.

"Any fly-tipping that we uncover is reported to Idverde.

"Before last July, the pick used to be in Wandle Park, However, the council put that park forward for a ridiculous no-bins experiment and we did not want to skew the results, so we changed the location."

She added that she has mixed feelings about what the group does, but finds it "strangely enjoyable."

"Everyone is incredibly good-natured about giving up some of their weekend to pick up other people's litter and it feels good to do something that immediately improves the area," she said. "However, there is a fine line between exposing the failings of Veolia, Idverde, the council, inconsiderate residents and visitors and letting them off the hook."

Just a few examples of the rubbish cleaned up by the group include a vacuum, a couple of trolley, a microwave and even a few tyres.
