A historic 500-year-old pub in St Albans has been put up for sale by its owner.

The Rose and Crown in St Michaels Street has been put up for sale by the owner for “personal reasons”, according to pub staff.

The pub is currently selling for over £100,000 and has a long history dating back to 1538. It is considered to be one of the oldest pubs in the area other than the Ye Olde Fighting Cocks.

Pub staff are uncertain that when it is passed onto new owners whether it will remain as a pub or the use of the building will be changed.

Rose and Crown manager, Jamie Edward said: “It is a very sad thing to have happened, but things have to move on.

“We will continue serving guests and customers until the new owners and whatever the new owners want to do with it is up to them – but for now we’ll be here for the pub.”
