Pet owners hoping to travel to Europe are urged to make sure they have correct documents ahead of Brexit deadline.

People in Watford have just 16 weeks to take the necessary action for travelling abroad with pets if the UK leave Europe with no deal after the October 31 deadline.

Owners are urged to make sure they have the correct travel documentation in place by contacting their vets which they may struggle to have beyond the deadline and depending on the outcome.

Medivet Watford 24-hour branch partner Candice Rubiera said: “If the UK does indeed leave the EU at the end of October, the pet passport scheme currently in place will no longer be valid.

“The reason we are urging pet owners to check in with us now is that we need up to four months to arrange additional health requirements.

“We are aware from talking to clients in spring that there has been a great deal of confusion around pet travel documentation in a post EU era.

"To avoid any additional stress of travelling with your pets and ensuring an enjoyable trip, owners really need to act now to ensure that the proper documentation and protection is in place.”

Additional health requirements for owners are:

  • Ensuring the pet is microchipped
  • Having a rabies vaccination and blood test 30 days after above
  • Waiting three calendar months after the blood test before travel
  • Getting an animal health certificate 10 days prior to travel
