Theresa May “let down the Grenfell tower community” and responded too slowly to the fire, according to the Mayor of London.

Sadiq Khan said it “beggars belief” that the Prime Minister referred to Grenfell in her resignation speech, given the ongoing struggle of the community in North Kensington.

The devastating fire in June 2017 led to the death of 72 residents of Grenfell Tower. More than two years later, 17 families are still in temporary accommodation.

In a speech announcing her resignation in May, the Prime Minister said she set up an independent enquiry into the fire, “to search for the truth so nothing like it can ever happen again, and so the people who lost their lives that night are never forgotten”.

She said she used her time in No. 10 "to fight the burning injustices that still scar our society”.

But Sadiq Khan said Mrs May had not taken the action needed to ensure all homes are safe in future.

Speaking at Mayor’s Question Time on Thursday, he said: “I fully agree with the London fire commissioner Danny Cotton that the Government has failed to do anywhere near enough to improve fire safety since the fire at Grenfell tower.

“More than two years later our building regulation system is still unfit for purpose. We still lack clarity on the basic question of whether certain types of cladding are safe, and tens of thousands of people continue to live in homes which may be unsafe.”

He added: “At every turn the Government’s attempts to improve the system of building regulations have been far too slow and limited.”

The Mayor’s comments came as Westminster’s Housing, Communities and Local Government Committee published a critical report on the response to the fire.

The committee said Government acted too slowly to reform building regulations and remove dangerous ACM cladding – the type used at Grenfell.

It said changes should not be limited to tall buildings, and include any with dangerous cladding, particularly those with vulnerable residents.
