Police have said a pilot could have been blinded after a laser was directed towards an aircraft flying over Bromley in the early hours of Sunday morning.

A civil aircraft was en route to London City Airport when a "criminal act of stupidity" fortunately didn't end in tragedy.

The green laser was traced to Haxted Road in Bromley and the suspect switched off the light and ran off on foot before police arrived.

"Shining laser light at flying aircraft is not just illegal, it’s just plain dumb," a police statement read.

"Don’t do it and don’t give a laser to anyone who may be tempted to even try it. No one will thank you for it."
