An investigation has been launched after a 14-year-old was killed at Chertsey Station.

Named locally, Sam Connor, reportedly handed his bag and phone to friends on July 15 before lying down in front of a train.

Officers were called at 4pm and Sam was pronounced dead at the scene.

British transport Police have now provided an update on the status of the investigation.

Detective Inspector Darren Gough, from British Transport Police, said: “First and foremost, I would like to express my deepest sorrow for the family of Sam Connor. On Monday their lives were shattered by the dreadful news that he had died in truly tragic circumstances.

“I understand there has been a great amount of speculation around the moments leading to Sam’s death and I would like to provide a brief update on the investigation being lead by BTP.

This continues to be an active investigation, however our initial enquiries suggest that tragically, this may have been a deliberate act. Of course, our investigation is on going and we will provide our evidence to HM Coroner as part of an inquest into Sam’s death."

A specially trained family liaison officer has been deployed to Sam's family and will continue to provide them with as much support as possible.

As the family come to terms with the loss of Sam, they have requested absolute privacy.

An inquest into the death of Sam Connor will be opened at Woking Coroners Court on July 23. The death is not currently being treated as suspicious.
