A dog who was found with a distinctive swollen mass on her stomach the size of melon has had it surgically removed - and will soon have a new family.

Martha, a black and white Staffordshire bull terrier, was taken to RSPCA Southridge Animal Centre in Potters Bar after being found in High Beech on Sunday, June 23.

The mammary mass shocked vets and residents after aA public appeal was launched to trace the canine’s owner.

An RSPCA spokesperson said: “Vets have successfully removed the mass from Martha’s body. It weighed a staggering 1.5kg.

“Since the operation Martha has been recovering really well and now she is no longer in pain her personality is shining through.

“While we have to be realistic as to the fact that she is a slightly older girl and she is still vulnerable to the tumour returning, she is making the most of her new lease of life.

“She has won over the hearts of everyone at the centre and we are delighted to say that she has also been reserved to live with a loving new family - once she has fully healed from her operation.

“We are so happy to have been able to give Martha a second chance and we are confident that she is going to live out the rest of her life surrounded by love and affection.”

Martha, who is believed to be around eight years old, is now in foster care where she continues her recovery and support from staff.

The RSPCA is keen to try and trace the dog’s owner, who is not microchipped and was not wearing a collar.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the RSPCA inspector appeal line on 0300 123 8018.
