Plans have been submitted for a rival motorway service station on the M25.

Extra wants to build on a site near Chalfont St Peter while Moto has eyed up land near Kings Langley.

The latest proposal to Chiltern District Council includes a food court, business centre, petrol station, and a 100-room hotel, on greenbelt land between junction 16 and j17 - close to Chalfont Lane, West Hyde.

Extra says the plans represent a £150m long term investment in the area which promises to bring other "significant benefits" to the local community and 340 jobs if approved.

More than 18 months of consultation has taken place - but Three Rivers councillor Cllr Phil Williams has raised concerns about loss of the greenbelt land.

He said: "This would affect people over in Maple Cross. I know some who are in support, others who are against. Obviously it is disappointing that we can't have a proper influence on this because it is not in our district. These plans will keep the traffic off our roads which is good but I still believe the negatives outweigh the benefits.

"Considering we have just declared a climate emergency and HS2 has taken away some fields, we want to preserve the greenbelt."

Andrew Long, chief executive and co-founder of Extra MSA Group, said: "Following more than 18 months of engagement with significant ‘stakeholders’, inclusive of the two public consultations at which more than 200 people attended, we are pleased to have submitted our carefully considered proposals, taking into account all ‘feedback’ received.

"There is a clear ‘road safety’ need for a motorway service area on this section of the M25 and between j16 and j17 is the optimum and most appropriate location. Extra’s professional team have created a unique masterplan that reflects the special character of the area. We look forward to continuing to work with the local community on this important new development.”

Extra's plans rival Moto's scheme for a service station on greenbelt land near junction 20.

As part of this scheme, an access road would be created off the A41 meaning visitors would be forced onto local roads.

Petitions have been launched against both proposals and the official Moto application on Three Rivers's planning portal has seen more than 1,300 objections.
