Extinction Rebellion protesters are calling on the Government to declare a climate emergency.

Two thirds of London councils have now declared or are expected to imminently declare a climate emergency.

The Mayor declared an emergency in the capital in December, following a motion from Green assembly member Caroline Russell.

But at a march in east London on Friday (July 12), protestors called on Sadiq Khan to back up his stance with action.

Alfie Castel-O’Leary, 14, a climate activist from Havering, said the Mayor was not doing enough.

He said: “I have a younger brother who’s only five and I want him to see 30 without his world falling apart before his eyes.

"I want London especially to get their air pollution legal again because we need to be able to breath clean air.

"We’ve got all these cars and buses on the road and although buses can be seen better than cars it’s still pollution. We should have specific hours of the day, even a full day, when cars aren’t allowed.”

An interactive map by local democracy reporter Jessie Mathewson shows which London councils have declared a climate emergency and which have yet to declare one:

Labour’s Unmesh Desai marched with climate activists from Bethnal Green to Hackney Town Hall, to highlight the threat of air pollution in London.

Traffic ground to a halt along Mare Street as protesters marched along the main road with flags, banners and a drum band, flanked by a police escort.

Mr Desai, who walked at the head of the march, said he was taking action to save the planet, and for the future of young people in London.

He said: “We need central government action – this is a national and international problem.

"Politicians are taking action, but if people have concerns they are justified: this has got to be above party politics, and we can all do more.”

Mr Desai added councils across London should follow the Mayor’s lead and declare a climate emergency.

He said: “One of the successes of Sadiq Khan as Mayor has been reducing pollution, better recycling rates, water fountains – little things but they make a difference, and get London ready for our zero-carbon future.”
