Tributes have been paid to a 40-year-old man who was stabbed to death in broad daylight on a Battersea street.

Members of the public rushed to the victims's aid, but he was 'beyond speaking', according to witnesses.

The man, who has been named locally as 'Tesfa Campbell,' died in hospital after being attacked outside a block of flats on Latchmere Road.

Two bunches of flowers to him were this morning laid near The Latchmere pub.

On one, a card read: "Rip Tesfa. Another gone 2 soon.

"You will be sorely missed. Thinking of all your friends + family.

"Nina B + Richard."

Today around 250 yards of the South Circular Road remained cordoned off by police.

The stabbing is thought to have happened opposite a four storey block of flats and outside Latchmere Leisure Centre, yards from a preschool.

The block of flats are made of yellow bricks, with walkways overlooking the murder scene.

A woman who lived in an estate near the stabbing, who wished not to be named said: "He was a nice guy, I used to know him.

"My sister went to school with him."

She said he did not live in the estate, but was from the area.

Another neighbour said: "I think there's drug dealing going on in the stairwell.

"There's always guys hanging around there. It could be to so with that.

"None of my neighbours saw it."

The victim was helped by a number of members of the public, including a man who was training for a triathlon.

His mother said: "My son is training for a triathlon and someone shouted, 'this man needs help'.

"He was jogging and someone shouted this man needs help.

"The man had a massive wound in his stomach. He was beyond speaking.

"My son put him in the recovery position before paramedics - he did his best."

The manager at The Latchmere confirmed his pub had nothing to do with the stabbing which happened on a road between near a preschool, leisure centre and block of flats.
