Safety measures could be added to a busy section of road to stop speeding traffic putting pedestrians at risk.

The council has drawn up plans to improve Mill Way in Hendon, which runs between Broadway and the A1 Watford Way, after a resident warned it had become “very dangerous” for people trying to cross the road.

Plans include speed limit signs which activate when cars drive past above the limit and dropped kerbs to make it easier for pedestrians to cross the road.

There could also be extra disabled bays and no loading signs put in at the corner of Mill Way and Broadway to restrict parking and make it easier for pedestrians to see oncoming traffic.

Barnet resident Lisa Zeital called for safety measures to be added to the road at a meeting of the Hendon Area Committee on January 15.

She said: “Mill Way is used as a quick way to get to the top of Apex Corner from Mill Hill Broadway. During the morning and afternoon rush hour, cars speed down this road. This is very dangerous.”

Ms Zeital added: “The Busy Bees nursery is halfway up the road. Throughout the day there are people bringing toddlers and babies to the nursery.

“Trying to navigate buggies and take children safely out of cars is incredibly difficult.”

A survey later carried out by the council found more than ten per cent of cars driving north along Mill Way were breaking the 30mph speed limit.

The safety measures, which would cost £23,100, were unanimously approved by councillors at Wednesday’s (June 26) meeting of the Hendon Area Committee.

Committee chairman Cllr Val Duschinsky said: “This looks to me like a really good scheme. I hope it will really help with some of the problems.”

A consultation will soon take place with local residents before a final decision is made on the improvements.
