A student has slammed Middlesex University after announcing the closure of one of their centres.

Through facebook, the University announced the centre for Psychoanalysis would close - and has issued redundancy letters to its current academics following the closure.

However, one student said that University authorities had kept people in the dark about the closure, only finding out about it through the post.

She added that people had only known about a ‘consultation process’ that had been announced in January.

The student, who did not want to be named, said: “If they needed to close this department down we understand, but to leave the students with absolutely no information. It is unbelievable. We don’t know what else to do.

“I think everything has broken down now. The staff have been issued notices of redundancy.”

She also said that the situation was “worse” than when the University shut down their Philosophy department in 2010 - and felt that students had little protection when a University shuts down a programme.

The student continued: “The whole thing is just really unbelievably bad and there is nobody to help us.

“It’s extraordinarily difficult and we are under huge stress.”

When approached for comment, a spokesperson from Middlesex University said: “Middlesex University is putting in place changes to ensure that the University remains financially robust and adapts to the changing needs of our students.

“It is a challenging time for the higher education sector and it is essential that the University forward plans to ensure that it remains a thriving institution where students can flourish and reach their potential.

“The University is committed to doing everything it can to support staff and students during any structural changes.”
