Lewisham Council has slammed vandals who smashed up the windows of Catford's Broadway Theatre.

All front-facing windows of the grade II listed building on Rushey Green, which was built in 1932, have been boarded up while the council works to have them repaired.

A sign on the front of the Broadway confirms it is still open for performances - and is due to host Kate Tempest this evening.

The sign describes the broken windows as a "random act of vandalism."

André Bourne, the council's cabinet member for culture said: “We are deeply disappointed by this act of pointless and unnecessary destruction.

"The Broadway Theatre is a much-loved community asset and this criminal damage not only affects the theatre’s staff and patrons, but it will incur an unnecessary extra cost to the council at a time when we are facing huge budgetary pressures.

"We are now working hard to get the damage repaired as quickly as possible.”
