A Winchmore Hill woman has been crowned a world champion sprinter in the World Masters Athletics Championships.

Claire Spurway, 41, achieved her lifelong dream when she won a gold medal in the 60 metre sprint at the championships held in Torun, Poland.

Her win comes after overcoming several injuries in 2019.

Claire always knew she wanted to be an athlete, and by the age of 12, she had joined her first athletics club.

Her first big success came in 2018, when she became a triple European Champion in the 60m, 200m and 4x200m relay at the European Masters Indoor Championships in Madrid.

The 41-year-old is now aiming to break the British Record for the 60m and 200m in the women’s 40+ age group.

Claire trains at the Fusion Southgate Leisure Centre, making use of the FANS programme which provides free or discounted use of facilities and financial support to national athletes.

Gareth Heard, the sport and community development manager at Fusion, said: “We were so thrilled to hear of Claire’s recent achievements at the World Championships and are delighted to be able to play our part in her success and help such elite athletes with their training through our FANS programme.”

The athlete also works with schools in the Enfield area to inspire children to be more active and to try their best in everything they do.
