Beddington Farmlands is offering the opportunity to get even closer to its diverse wildlife with the opportunity to come to its 2019 open day on June 20.

The public are being encouraged to explore the 120 hectare sites on the banks of the river Wandle.

Viridor, the company behind the controversial nearby incinerator, is carrying out restoration work on the farmlands.

Pete Walker, Viridor’s Closed Landfill Manager said: “The restoration team is working on a series of habitat creation projects across the Beddington Farmlands and we appreciate that it can be tricky to understand the progress being made on the Farmlands from the permissive footpath.”

Viridor said it is restoring the Beddington Farmlands into high quality habitats, including wet grassland, meadowlands, and edge habitats- to support wildlife species including lapwing and skylark, breeding wildfowl and duck populations.

The restoration team wants to invite members of the community on guided tours across the site to view the wet grassland and meadowland habitat creation.

To demonstrate the progress made to date, and the work planned in the coming months and years, Viridor has published a Beddington Farmlands Restoration Roadmap.

This summarises the restoration plan and Viridor’s planned timetable.

Viridor has come under pressure in the past for its planned controversial £205m Beddington incinerator, over concerns of air pollution in the area.

Attendance on the Farmlands tours will be by registration only- there will be guided tours departing from the landfill office at 10am and 13.00.
