Police have released details of the reasons half-a-dozen people were arrested at the Epsom Derby over the weekend.

With more than 36,000 racegoers in ticketed sections and tens of thousands on The Hill, officers were certainly kept busy.

But overall, Surrey police said the day was a success, with just the six arrests taking place at the Derby, a number Chief Superintendent Fiona Macpherson said was down on previous years.

"Events such as these give us a larger platform to meet and engage with members of the public and that’s what policing is all about," she said.

“We had extremely hot weather, especially on Derby Day, and our officers worked long, hard shifts in the heat preventing crime and ensuring everyone was safe.

“As always, we worked extremely closely with our partners, including Epsom Downs Racecourse, our planning was meticulous and detailed ensuring a well organised and policed event."

But now that the race is over with, police have revealed exactly why those six people were arrested.
