An animal lover who ran into the road and stopped traffic to protect crossing geese and goslings in Catford has joined calls for warnings to drivers.

Maureen Liston, 72, from Bromley Common, had just finished shopping at Homebase by Bromley Road when she saw the gaggle of geese trying to cross the busy road from St John’s Church.

“I thought ‘Oh no’ so I stood in the road and stopped the traffic to let the geese across. Some people tooted their horns and it frightened the life out of the geese.

“One of the smaller babies kept hovering and I thought she was going to get killed.”

Mrs Liston, who describes herself as an “animal freak” and has three cats at home, has echoed warnings from the vicar of St John’s Church, who asked drivers on Bromley Road to be mindful of the geese after two goslings were runover earlier this month.

The Reverend Dr Martin Thomas told News Shopper: "It would be great if drivers could take more care on this stretch outside St John's. The arrival of the geese always reminds us that the wonderful creation is all around us if we only find time to stop and look."

Mrs Liston has also called on authorities to install more warning signs on the road to alert drivers about the geese.

“This one particular car, I think he thought he was at brands hatch,” she told News Shopper, criticising the speed some cars were travelling in the 30mph zone.

“I love animals full stop and I hate to see them get injured. When I got back to the bus stop people looked at me as though I was crackers because the traffic was so full on and I was in the middle of the road.”

Despite putting herself at risk, Mrs Liston said she was pleased to have helped all four geese and six goslings across Bromley Road unharmed.

She also praised the drivers who stopped to allow the geese to cross when she stepped into the road.

A spokeswoman for Transport for London confirmed to News Shopper that there is already a signpost on Bromley road to alert drivers about geese, but promised to look into ways of increasing awareness.

She said: “We are aware of community concerns around geese crossing Bromley Road and are working with Lewisham Council on a way forward to protect the animals.

“We installed ‘Wild Fowl Crossing’ signs in 2017 to remind motorists to drive carefully in this area. We will meet Lewisham’s Animal Welfare Officer on site to agree on the best next steps to take.”
