Faulty lights in a busy subway have been fixed – after six months of darkness.
The ceiling lights in a subway in Watford town centre have been out of action to the dismay of Nascot ward councillor Mark Hofman.
The underpass in question connects a well-used car park with Watford Central Library, The Horns Pub and Town Hall and, due to its location in the middle of a busy roundabout, pedestrians sometimes have little choice but to use it.
Cllr Hofman had been in contact with Hertfordshire County Council trying to resolve the problem. He was concerned the subway was becoming a hotspot for anti-social behaviour and said he "dreads" to think how subway users must feel when using the car park after dark.
But the county council said UK Power Networks was responsible for fixing the lights.
However, when the Observer contacted UKPN on May 14, the company said it had no record of the job and were unaware of the issue.
On May 17, a spokeswoman for UKPN said: “UK Power Networks engineers have worked quickly and safely to complete the repair of a piece of electrical equipment at Hempstead Road subway in Watford.
"We have worked closely with the county council’s contractors to resolve a lighting fault at this site caused by third party damage. We apologise to residents for any inconvenience caused.”
