One of Croydon's last independent bakeries, which has traded for over 40 years, is to close this week.

Michael Brown's Bakery, based on Brighton Road in south Croydon, posted a notice in their window announcing that Saturday will be their final day of trading.

According to the notice, the family run business is closing due to a "change in the personal circumstances of the owner."

It reads: "We would like to thank all of our customers who have supported the business over the past 44 years, and all of the staff who have worked at Michael Brown's who have given us the ability to provide the products and service that we believe have been an important part of the local community.

"I would like to confirm that the bakery will operate as normal up until its closing date on Saturday, May 25.

"It is my hope that there will continue to be a bakers at this site and we are in the process of negotiating with another family bakers to open here."

Locals were quick to express their sadness at the closure of a pillar of the business community.

On their Facebook page, Croydon Police said: "Michael Brown’s Bakery, a family run business that enjoyed a loyal following of customers (including the patronage of several police officers) who loved the bakery goodness made and sold on the premises.

"A notice stating the business is closing due to personal reasons has appeared in the shop window.

"We wish the Brown Family and all the staff the very best for the future and thank them for all the years they have offered such great food and a friendly welcome to everyone in their shop."
