You might think twice about grabbing a takeaway from this chicken shop in Carshalton.

Morley’s Fried Chicken in Wrythe Lane has been given a 0 out of 5, the lowest possible food hygiene rating.

The takeaway was visited by inspectors at the end of January, who said urgent improvement is necessary.

Major steps need to be taken in all three categories, hygienic food handling, cleanliness of the building and management of food safety.

The rating is supposed to give a snapshot of how restaurants are doing in three areas.

An inspector from the council looks at three areas, how hygienically the food is handled, the physical condition of the business this includes cleanliness, layout, ventilation and pest control.

It also considers how the business keeps food safe including whether staff have been given training and systems are in place to make sure food is safe to eat.

But unlike in Northern Ireland and Wales it is not the law for establishments to display their rating.

The Food Standards Agency website says: “Businesses which are given low ratings must make urgent or major improvements to hygiene standards.

“The food safety officer will tell the business how quickly these improvements must be made and this will depend on the type of issue that needs to be addressed.”
