A "friendly giant" therapy dog has been recognised at Crufts for his outstanding contribution to the Bromley community.

Lois Hyett, 67, bought Gunner as a puppy seven years ago as a present to herself.

However, within six months, Lois, who lives in Orpington, was convinced her German Shepard was special.

"I just knew he could be a therapy dog," Lois told News Shopper. "He was just so calm and gentle and sweet-tempered."

Before his first birthday, Gunner was already visiting care homes in Bromley to bring some joy.

Seven years later and Gunner is one of the most popular dogs in the borough.

"To see people’s reactions to him delights me. He is too good to just be mine," Lois laughed.

Gunner is a regular at Baycroft Grays care home in St Paul’s Cray and often visits St Mary Cray Primary School.

Lois said: "The kids absolutely adore him. He brightens their day and calms them down. Even some of the teachers will come and have a cuddle with him."

Gunner often sits while children read to him or is just there for company if a pupil is having a tough day.

Lois volunteers with Gunner for the charity Therapy Dogs UK, which led to the Harriet Heart medal being presented at Crufts this month.

The owner said she was proud to be recognised for the selfless work she and Gunner do for the community.

Both are still loving every minute of being there for others across Bromley.

Lois said: "He knows when I put on his uniform and I wear mine that he is going to work. His tail goes up and you can see how bubbly he is.

"He just wants to go."

One of the best things about volunteering for Lois is to see how Gunner can impact strangers.

"People’s faces light up when they see him," she said.

"When I go on a train with him people get off and say 'I haven’t touched your dog but he has made my journey much better.'"

If you want to meet Gunner, he can often be found at his favourite café, Pato Lounge, or in the Nugent Shopping Centre where people can come and say hello.
