The district’s MP has pledged her support to protect the planet by participating in the world’s largest, energy-saving annual event next week.

Dame Eleanor Laing along with more the 100 MPs showed their support in Parliament earlier this week towards Earth Hour.

The annual event encourages people across the world to switch off their lights for one hour to highlight the importance of the environment and tackling climate change.

Dame Eleanor said: “Earth Hour gives a voice to people everywhere who want to raise awareness of some of the biggest environmental challenges we are facing.

“I hope that by adding my voice for the planet I can encourage my constituents to do the same.”

The hashtag #VoiceForThePlanet was launched by the Global Shapes this year, aiming to encourage everyone to make small changes and prevent further destruction the planet.

Acts include embracing reusable energy or changing the way you eat, shop and lifestyle.

Hundreds of millions of people are expected to take part this year, including the world’s biggest landmarks such as Buckingham Palace, Sydney Opera House and the Eiffel Tower.

Earth Hour’s global lights out will take place on Saturday, March 30, 8.30pm.
