Police are concerned drunks will cause a nuisance if a Blackheath restaurant gets approval to open into the early hours.

Taksim Bistro in Blackheath Hill has asked Greenwich Council to alter its licence so it can serve late-night grub until 3am.

The restaurant is currently open, selling food and booze, until midnight on weekends and 11pm during the week.

Police have told the council they are concerned that serving food until 3am will attract anti-social behaviour as people – likely to be drunk – will head there after their nights out.

According to council documents, PC Giles Balestrini, Greenwich licensing officer, said: “The police believe that by keeping the premises open until 3am it is highly likely to attract more late-night customers to the area or encourage late-night drinkers that are leaving the close by public houses to hang around in the area whilst they wait for their food.

“These customers are highly likely to be drunk and the police are concerned that this will lead to public nuisance and crime and disorder, in the forms of fighting, antisocial behaviour and noise, which will effect local the local residents.”

Police have suggested scaling back the requested hours until 2am, in a bid to stop as many hungry intoxicated customers causing problems for neighbours.

It has also been suggested that delivery services such as Uber Eats and Deliveroo only operate until midnight, as the noise bikes and drivers can make could upset neighbours.

Councillors will make a decision at a meeting next on March 21.
