The Mayor of London’s chief staff will face questioning over his whether he is meeting his environmental targets.

The London Assembly environment committee will tomorrow meet with Shirley Rodrigues, the deputy mayor for environment and his other staff to discuss issues such as the Ultra Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ) and his recycling targets.

Chairman of the environment committee, Caroline Russell, said she is pleased the ULEZ will be extended following recommendations of the assembly and said the scheme is a “step in the right direction”.

She added: “London’s recycling levels are stagnant and boroughs won’t meet the Mayor’s targets at the current rate.

“We’ve raised the issue of inadequate recycling facilities for flats – we want boroughs to work on this and publish how they’re doing.

“The Committee will monitor the Mayor’s promise that cuts to the environment budget won’t mean he’s less committed to tackling waste, improving air quality and moving towards a zero-carbon city status.”

Since becoming mayor Mr Khan has also declared a climate emergency in the capital and a diesel scrappage scheme to help vans swap to less polluting vehicles with the introduction of the ULEZ.
