Schools in Greenwich are among the worst in London for GCSE results, a new report has revealed.

Secondary schools in the borough have the worst results in the capital for Attainment 8, the average score obtained by a student for their best eight GCSE results.

The borough also has the second to worst percentage rates for kids achieving English and maths grades 9 to 5, a new scoring system introduced to replace A*-C.

A pass grade, previously a C, is now a 4, with the top score of 9 reflecting the need for a grade higher than the old A*.

In a new report, set to be discussed by a scrutiny panel on Thursday, officers say the borough also has the worst English Baccalaureate scores in London.

Cabinet member for education, and deputy leader of the council, David Gardner, said the results were “clearly not where we want to be”.

He said: “The local authority and some schools are very disappointed by the 2018 GCSE results.

“While the borough is at the national average for Attainment 8, our position in London is clearly not where we want it to be. We are working closely with our schools and supporting them to turn this situation around.

“A series of meetings have taken place with headteachers to discuss the results and learning from each other is ongoing.

“We are confident that schools have robust action plans in place to ensure results are improved for 2019.

“Schools with positive results are sharing best practice and we remain committed to working to ensure that every child in our borough has the best possible chance to achieve their potential.

“There were some outstanding individual achievements, including one student who received straight 9s, and is one of only 732 pupils in the country to do so.”

Only 39.4 per cent of kids got a 9-5 in English and maths, well below the capital’s 48.7 per cent average.

The report reveals the overall Attainment 8 score is 44.5, below the London average of 49.2, with Progress 8 being also below the London average of 0.23, coming in at -0.18.

Officers say in the report that improving Progress 8 is a “key priority”, adding: “The local authority and school leaders recognise that the outcomes for our young people are too low and this needs to be addressed as a matter of urgency.”

Three schools were below the “floor standard”, government expectations based on how much progress pupils are judged to have made between Key Stage 2 SATs and GCSE exams.

The Halley Academy, Stationer’s Crown Woods and The John Roan – which has controversially been hit with an academisation order, all fell below the standard.
