Bogus waste collectors illegally dumped 20 tonnes of rubbish costing the taxpayer £6,000.

Harrow Council issued a warning to people after a mountain of waste had to be cleared from Belmont last week.

Rogue traders without a valid Waste Carriers Licence and ID approach people in Harrow offering to remove their rubbish, before dumping it illegally and creating an eyesore like the one in Belmont.

The estimated cost of clearance for fly-tipping to local authorities in England in 2017/18 was £12.2 million.

Cllr Varsha Parmar, Cabinet member for environment said: “It makes me so angry that taxpayers have once again had to clear up after these criminals – it’s unacceptable. I can’t stress this enough, if you’re paying for waste removal or building works make sure they have a Waste Carrier Licence and ID or you could land yourself in trouble with the law if they dump it illegally.”

Harrow Council urged people who are approached to demand to see a Waste Carrier Licence and cross check those details here https://environment.data.gov.uk/public-register/view/search-waste-carriers-brokers
