HILLINGDON is ranked fourth of London boroughs for the number of potholes reported.

It was notified of 3,091 in 2017/18 and spent nearly £500,000 on repairs and £10,000 in compensation to drivers.

The figures were obtained by Confused.com in Freedom of Information requests, which showed that only Lewisham, Croydon and Sutton were ahead of Hillingdon.

Further research by the website found more than a third of UK drivers suffered damage to their cars as a result of poor road conditions.

February is the most prolific month for this, as more than one in seven incidents occurred then.

Most of the damage was to tyres, while more than a quarter said hitting the pothole caused damaged to their suspension.

Only one in five drivers tried to claim compensation, however, for hitting a pothole.

The website has now produced a guide on how to claim. It can be found at https://www.confused.com/car-insurance/guides/how-to-claim-for-pothole-damage
