A former Croydon councillor has cancelled his Labour membership, condemning the party for its handling of internal anti-Semitism and Brexit.

Andrew Rendle, who represented Ashburton for four years, publicly announced that he was quitting the party earlier this month, posting a picture of his chopped up membership card online.

Disapproving of Jeremy Corbyn's leadership, he claims the party's internal structure has turned a blind eye to rampant anti-Semitism and failed to represent the view of the majority of members on Brexit.

Mr Rendle, who works in TV, said: "There is a real undercurrent of anti-Semitism in the party and the leadership really isn't doing enough about it.

"Some members currently suspended for anti-Semitism are still serving on committees - they're sending out mixed messages. Look at the bullying of Luciana Berger MP after she spoke out as well.

"I do feel those harbouring these kind of views now feel more comfortable expressing them with the current leadership as they're not facing proper consequences."

Earlier this month Labour revealed it has investigated 673 cases of anti-Semitism but expelled only 13 members, prompting MPs to demand further action.

Luciana Berger, Labour MP for Liverpool Wavertree, has vocally criticised the party's handling of the issue, herself being a victim of abuse. Last week local members submitted two votes of no confidence in her leadership, condemning her for "continually" speaking out against Jeremy Corbyn.

Mr Rendle expressed further dismay at the party's current position on Brexit, claiming Corbyn is enabling Theresa May's strategy rather than fighting for remain as the majority of members would like him to.

"I never thought I'd see a Labour party supporting the Tories on leaving the EU.

"Corbyn's been ardently anti-EU since day one, regardless of what the majority of members and the youth who enabled his leadership want."

"I fear that Labour has just become a glorified protest movement. I get the impression that a lot of people like being in opposition and are up for making the tough decisions.

"The Tories are good at clinging on to power, and when push comes to shove they close their ranks. Power is not a dirty word. "

Mr Rendle's was not selected to run for re-election in 2018 after local boundaries were withdrawn and his ward became Addiscombe East.

He still lives in the area and says he has no problems with the local party.

Labour have stressed their commitment to stamping out anti-Semitism, pointing out that the investigated cases represent just 0.1% of the party's membership.

Earlier this week Tom Watson, deputy leader, accused the Liverpool Wavertree branch of "bullying" Luciana Berger, calling for them to be suspended.
