An empty pub in Plumstead has been eyed up by developers wanting to build new flats.

The Glennmore Arms has been closed for “some time” according to Z Group Archetics, who have submitted plans for four new homes on behalf of the building’s owner.

The pub, in Edison Grove, is listed as having ‘special character’, but developers say houses will bring the site back into use.

The developers said: “The general principle is to convert the whole site in residential accommodation as the current ground floor use of the site is vacant and no longer viable or sustainable and would be suited to a residential use for the site.

“The character of the public house has been retained throughout the scheme to keep its appearance within the public realm and enhance its contribution to the area of special character.”

According to planning documents, it is not viable to run a boozer at the site anymore, which is predominantly surrounded by houses.

Nearby pubs include the Who’d a Thought It on Timbercroft Lane, The Old Mill in Old Mill Road and The Star Plumstead in Plumstead Common Road.

The Campaign for Real Ale estimates pubs in the UK are closing at a rate of 29 a week – double the rate of 2011.

The plans – published last week – are currently being considered by planning officers at the council.

The upstairs of the pub already has permission for a flat conversion.
