Two areas of green space in Erith that neighbours fought to save from development have been left out of the latest business plan for Bexley Council’s development company.

The omission of Wilde Road comes as councillors are set to give the green light for five other sites – including Old Farm Park in Sidcup – to be transferred to BexleyCo, a development company set up by the council in 2017.

Campaigners fought for Old Farm Park in 2017, with neighbours in fierce opposition to plans to concrete over the green space for houses.

More than 2,000 people backed a petition against a housing development at the site, a row that has rumbled on for nearly four years.

Last year neighbours in Wilde Road and Bronte Close also fought plans for a dozen flats on top of two parcels of green space in their Erith estate.

Wilde Road, along with parts of the Nags Head Lane car park, had been earmarked for development by BexleyCo, but have been left out of the company’s latest business plan.

Instead, the council is planning to propose smaller developments.

A new report explains: “These sites will be reviewed by the council’s regeneration and growth team, with a view to bringing forward low-density, quality development on both sites.”

West Street small car park, Felixstowe Road car park, 221 Erith Road and land at Lesney Park Road are also in line to be given to BexleyCo at next week’s public cabinet.

The council says BexleyCo will be important to its ambitious growth strategy – which proposes 31,000 homes by 2050.

The report says: “The updated business plan is based on progressing schemes at Old Farm Park, West Street small park, the former Hainault care home Lesney Park and 221 Erith Road (land adjoining Bursted Woods).

“Alongside this, the company will progress the former Felixstowe Road car park site and will include in its consideration whether the site lends itself to a private rented sector scheme, commercial and industrial opportunities.

“Subject to planning, this first phase is expected to provide in the range of 396 – 416 housing units mainly for market sale.”

Old Farm Park is currently subject to an “asset of community value” process, which allows any group to bid to acquire the site.

BexleyCo was set up in 2017, with its second business plan set to be approved at a cabinet meeting next Monday, January 28.
