A car was left floating in water last night after flooding hit areas near Elverson Road DLR station in Lewisham.

One resident took his frustrations out on Twitter to bemoan the slow response from Thames Water.

However, Thames Water said it stopped the water flow inside a playground as soon as it arrived on Bliss Crescent.

It said the cause of the flooding was from a burst 18-inch wide pipe.

A spokeswoman said: "We responded quickly and were able to stop the flow of water from the pipe as soon as we arrived on site to reduce the impact of the flooding.

"Our repairs to the pipe have begun and we’ll be working 24/7 in the coming days to get the job finished as soon as we can after which, we’ll work with Greenwich Council to restore the play area. We’re sorry for any disruption caused."

One car and six garages suffered from flooding and Thames Water has contacted the owners.

All water supplies were back working last night and no homes were affected by the escaped water.
