Drivers in Keston say they are fed-up with a water leak which they claim has caused a busy road to freeze over and led to multiple accidents.

Michelle Johnson, who owns Highams Farm in Layhams Road, told News Shopper she witnessed "up to eight accidents" yesterday morning (December 13) as drivers struggled on the icy road.

According to her, the slippery road has been caused by a leak from a burst water main which occurred when the road was resurfaced during the summer.

"I’ve made numerous phone calls to Thames Water and they keep saying it is fixed. But it's been running like a river some days," she said.

Ms Johnson told of how yesterday she had to go out with other members of the public and tell oncoming traffic to slow down, warning them of the icy conditions.

She said: "It’s such a major incident waiting to happen. It should have been closed.

"As local landowners it matters to us and we’ve done our best for everyone here.

"We care about that road because it's out business," she said.

Among these accidents yesterday, Christopher Scott, a warehouse manager who travels down Layhams Road every day for work, came off of his motorcycle after he lost control on the icy road.

His wife Amanda Scott said that although he is fine, she was still panicked when she received the phone call.

"I dread the thought of what could have happened. I'm currently pregnant as well so we definitely didn't need this stress as well," she said.

Mrs Scott said this ongoing saga over the burst water pipe has been the talk of the community for months, saying that residents warned the road would freeze over and multiple reports have been made to Thames Water but nothing has been done.

When asked about this, a spokesman for Thames Water said they know of the leak but it is located on private land, making it complicated for them to fix it.

"We’re aware of the leak on Layhams Road, but it’s on a private pipe and we’re currently trying to contact the landowner.

"Leaks on private pipes are the responsibility of the landowner, but as part of our drive to reduce leakage we offer to fix them for free.

"Once the landowner has been identified, we’ll offer to arrange a suitable time to repair the pipe as we’re unable to carry out the work without their permission.”
