A party is continuing to fight its campaign for “fairer fares” after a petition was knocked back.

The Watford Lib Dems want stations in and around Watford to be re-zoned to zone six and recently presented a 6,000 strong petition to Mayor of London Sadiq Khan.

But the mayor rejected it saying he was “focused on making travel affordable for all Londoners” and it was “rare” that a station is rezoned.

Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor has responded to the setback by writing to the Secretary of State for Transport, Chris Grayling MP, where he has demanded an urgent review.

The Lib Dems say commuters should feel aggrieved because commuters travelling in from Watford pay up to £1,400 more a year than those travelling into London from a similar distance in Epping, Essex.

Watford Observer:

Elected Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor said, “The number one concern I’ve had from Watford commuters is that they are fed up of paying more to travel into London than other people who live further away from the capital city.

“Many London residents travel to Watford every day for work, leisure or education. Resident in both Watford and London would benefit from fair zoning of local train stations. The zoning system as it stands is outdated and a proper review is long overdue.

"The Department of Transport must take this issue seriously and conduct a much needed review of the current arrangements. We need fairer fares for our town.”

Watford Met sits in zone 7, Watford High Street is in zone 8 alongside Bushey station, while Watford Junction sits in its own zone W.
