Lee Bowyer expects Lewis Page to get better and better once he’s up to full fitness.

Page signed a new contract on Monday tying him down to the Addicks until 2020 with an option of extending it a further year based on appearances.

The left-back had impressed since his arrival from West Ham in January last year, particularly in the closing part of last season and this season up until sustaining a groin injury at Scunthorpe in early October.

Bowyer said of Page: “He’s been outstanding for me. A great signing. He’s not been the luckiest (with injury). I think he’ll get better and better. It’s a great signing for us and I think we’ve got the best left back in the league.”

“He’s an all-rounder. He’s a good defender. One-v-one he’s very good, he defends the back post well and he’s very good at getting forward, so the way we play he gives us an outlet and he’s got great delivery on the run.”

Page spoke of his joy on signing a new deal and praised the effect Bowyer has had on his game.

“I’m delighted,” said Page

“I’m happy to keep going with Charlton. I’m really enjoying my time here. Lee Bowyer has been brilliant for me, he’s given me the confidence to go out and play. Now it’s just for me about staying fit and getting back out there.”

It’s been no secret that Bowyer will be looking to bring in another left back in the January transfer window, but with the extension of Page’s deal it may mean any new arrival will be playing understudy to the 22-year-old.
