A Bickley school has won an award for a heartwarming community initiative bringing young children and nursing home residents together.

Bickley Park School picked up the accolade in awards organised by Perrys Chartered Accountants to help celebrate inspiring individuals, charities and businesses across the county.

Head of nursery Sarah Spiteri instigated the scheme that involves weekly visits to Crown Meadow Nursing Home after seeing a television programme that highlighted the positive effects of bringing two different generations together, both for young people and old.

Sarah said: “Winning the Perrys Exceptional Business Community Initiative Award is an amazing feat as we were up against many strong contenders in this category.

"When we entered, we knew our campaign had strong merits, but we didn’t expect to be the ones taking a specially-engraved trophy back to school with us."

Patrick Wenham, headmaster at Bickley Park School, added: “As with our pupils, we let our staff explore and instigate ideas for the benefit of everyone around them.

"I’m very proud to have such an inspirational team and the boys will be delighted to hear we are award winners."
