People exploiting a Blue Badge for parking benefits will be hit with a criminal record and a fine before being named and shamed, Bromley Council has warned.

The stark warning was made after the council made 19 more prosecutions with fines totalling £9,789.

Of these drivers, 13 were caught using a disability parking badge when the holder was not present.

Councillor Kate Lymer, executive councillor for public protection and enforcement, said: "It is sad to see this kind of scheme abuse is continuing as it affects the everyday lives of genuine scheme users directly.

"The casual attitude of some drivers who knowingly misuse Blue Badges belonging to their relatives is unacceptable and must change.

"These drivers must realise that Blue Badge misuse is a serious matter regardless of the circumstances and a zero tolerance applies in all cases.

"If they continue, they will be caught and must be prepared to accept the unpleasant consequences – a criminal record, a fine and the shame of being named publicly."

The 19 offences took place between January 8 and July 20.
