Full story: Driver dies after car hits stationary lorry on A1

The A1 has been shut in one direction because of a serious collision.

Drivers are being turned away and escorted off the carriageway by police after two vehicles crashed near Borehamwood.

It is closed northbound between Stirling Corner and the M25.

Hertfordshire Constabulary has confirmed a vehicle hit a stationary lorry.

One person was trapped and had to be freed by crews. There is no further information at this stage on casualties.

An air ambulance attended.

An East of England ambulance spokeswoman said: “We were called at 10.17am today to reports of a two-vehicle road traffic collision on the A1 northbound.

"Two rapid response vehicles, two ambulance officers, an ambulance crew, and the air ambulance from London Air Ambulance were sent to the scene to help.”

Investigation work is being carried out and the road is expected to be shut for some time.

Southbound traffic was held at one stage to allow an air ambulance to land.

Highways England have asked commuters to use the M1 instead of the A1 for the time being.

Caught traffic is being turned around and let off at Rowley Lane.

There are queues southbound on the A1 approaching Stirling Corner while there are delays on Barnet Lane towards Stirling Corner from Elstree.
