Parking restrictions will not be imposed in one road in Purley thanks to a petition from a group of residents.

A proposal to impose restrictions on Aveling Close was discussed by Croydon Council’s Traffic Management Advisory Committee on Wednesday night.

The plans were put forward after a resident complained that obstructive parking in the turning head of the road was restricting big vehicles like bin lorries and emergency services.

But the council’s parking design manager David Wakeling told the meeting: “Due to the strong objections of Aveling Close, we recommend we don’t go ahead with this scheme.”

As well as a petition against the proposal, there was an objection from a residents’ association representing 142 properties.

Robert Flemming, who started the petition, said to the committee: “Thank you for reading our petition we are here to show how strongly we feel about the restrictions.”

In the same report, the committee recommended to approve plans to roll out parking restrictions in a number of other roads.

Double yellow lines will be introduced at Carlton Road in South Croydon after concerns were raised that cars parking on the western side of the road, opposite Rocklands Drive, made it hard to see traffic coming from Selsdon Road. Also, when a bus stopped in the road it was becoming blocked in both directions, it was stated.

At Courtwood Lane in Addington, there will be double yellow lines on the bends of the road.

This is to stop parked cars obstructing the view of drivers turning in from Markfield and Osward.

A circular island at the end of Namton Drive in Thornton Heath will also get double yellow lines after a resident complained that he and his neighbours could not see the road when leaving their driveways.
