Dozens of Penge residents have rallied together to restore a war memorial after poppies were torn down in an "utterly mindless" act.

A 30-year-old man from Beckenham was arrested after the remembrance poppies were ruthlessly ripped down from railings at the Penge War Memorial on October 18.

Furious residents and army cadet volunteers repaired as many poppies as possible before gathering on the high street on Sunday (October 21) to return them.

Penge resident of 15 years, Jennifer Stephens, told News Shopper: “The community spirit here is just brilliant.

"We were upset by the vandals’ actions but this made us stronger."

As a member of Penge Partners and Penge Poppies, Jennifer thanked those who turned up to show support.

"The atmosphere was just amazing," she added. "We would very much like to thank the army cadets too for everything they did."

Penge Poppies is a group of volunteers working to raise money throughout the year for the Royal British Legion.

Leader of Bromley Council Colin Smith described the damage as "utterly mindless and despicable" and said it was a "very sad reflection" on those responsible.

He added: "The immortal words ‘we will remember them’ will outlast us all, with the knitted poppies showing how much the people of Penge do both care and remember and I salute their commitment to put the poppies back in their rightful place."

After the poppies were repaired and returned, Councillor Kathy Bance told News Shopper: "Penge came together as it always does.

"Lots of residents turned out and lots helped with the damaged poppies so they could be reused.

"We wish no harm to the person responsible, they obviously have issues."

Speaking about the possibility of CCTV outside Penge Recreation Ground, Cllr Bance added: "We have considered CCTV but people thought it wouldn't deter. However, residents are now demanding it."

A police spokesman said told News Shopper: "The suspect for this offence has been released under investigation whilst more evidence is obtained."
