Security measures have been put in place to prevent more travellers illegally taking over land in Bromley.

The owner of Bickley Manor Hotel in Blackbrook Lane described how the business was suffering back in February after a nearby field was left as an "eyesore" following a traveller invasion in July 2017.

A landowner was prosecuted in May for failing to clear the fly-tipping before the council successfully sought a High Court injunction in August to ban travellers.

The land in Blackbrook Lane has now finally been cleared and security measures implemented.

Councillor Kate Lymer described it as "mission accomplished".

Leader of Bromley Council, Colin Smith, added: "I know that local residents, as well as those passing through on foot or by car from further afield are delighted that this eyesore has finally been removed by the landowners.

"Also to see that far more substantive security measures have been set in place to minimise the possibility of any further criminal activity on site."

These measures include physical barriers both in front of and behind the gates.

It was a costly summer after travellers moved on to different parts of Bromley including a rugby club in Hayes, Willet Recreation Ground in Petts Wood, Green Street Green and Parkfield Way Recreation Ground.

After the High Court injunction was applied, a charity called Friends, Families and Travellers slammed the council and suggested some travellers have no choice but to stay illegally on land.

Cllr Smith added: "As we now turn the page to close this difficult chapter, the lesson to be learned, once again, is to please, please, please, no matter how big or small your building project, house clearance or simple internal alteration works might be, always use an Environment Agency waste disposal operator to dispose of your waste."
