THE widow of a cyclist killed in a hit- and-run crash has appealed to those responsible to give themselves up.

Paula McLean's husband Michael, 46, died after being knocked off his bicycle in Forest Road, Walthamstow, at around 6am on Tuesday.

Mrs McLean, 35, of Brettenham Road, Walthamstow, says she wants the driver to know the results of recklessness.

She said: "Hand yourself in. You know you have done wrong - face the consequences.

"I'm angry that they didn't even stop. I don't know how long he lay there before help came."

Mr McLean, who was also known as Jack, died in Whipps Cross University Hospital later on Tuesday morning from multiple injuries.

He had been cycling in Forest Road between 5.30am and 6am on his way to work at waste management firm Bywaters in Leyton.

Police say the car that hit him was dark green, possibly a Vauxhall Vectra, and was travelling towards The Bell pub.

The vehicle hit Mr McLean with such force that he was found 30 metres away from his bicycle.

The driver did not stop after the accident, which happened near the junction with Winns Terrace.

Forest Road was sealed off for six hours while forensic examinations were carried out on the scene.

Mr McLean had four children in Jamaica with whom he kept in regular contact, and took an active role in the upbringing of his stepdaughter Chloe, aged nine.

Mrs McLean said: "He was a family man. My daughter was very fond of him, she had a lot of love and respect for him. He was a big part of her life - she listened to him more than me. She still doesn't fully understand that she's not going to see him again."

Mr McLean arrived in Britain from Jamaica in 2000. The couple first got together five years ago, and wed in April 2004.

Apart from his family, he loved many kinds of music - especially roots reggae - and had worked as a DJ in Jamaica.

Anyone who can help with the investigation should call the Metropolitan Police's Collision Investigation Unit on 8345 4943.

* Robert Vaughan, local co-ordinator for the Waltham Forest Cycling Campaign which lobbies for improved facilities for cyclists, said: "We have expressed concern to the council about that particular part of Forest Road.

"Vehicles come fairly quickly down the hill from the Bell junction and round a bend. We have asked the council to look at the issue of parked cars - some drivers do not pay attention and there is a risk.
