Ealing Trailfinders were heavy favourites against London Scottish but full-back Peter Lydon admits even he was shocked at how easy their 72-12 win was.

The Irishman had spent three years with Scottish before making the move to Vallis Way this summer and played an instrumental role in their handsome win.

Ealing ran in ten tries to trounce the visitors and, even though Lydon insists Scottish played well, they just could not live with Ealing's potent attack.

“They are a quality team, we just took it to that next level that we've been looking for since the start of the season and they just weren't quite able to deal with it,” he said.

“If you'd told me beforehand that we would win 72-12, I would have laughed at you. It was a really good day at the office.''

Ealing now have four league wins from as many games and, after finishing third last campaign, it must be tempting for the team to harbour hopes of promotion. Lydon, though, is grounded.

''We've had meetings about what are our expectations are and said that we will take it game by game.

“There are no play-offs this year, but we don't want to say, 'we want to finish first', because if it's not possible with five or six games to go, then what do we go to?

“We are just looking at our performances week to week.''

Lydon's own contributions were notable with one try, two penalties and six conversions capping off a wonderful afternoon.

“I hadn't scored [a try] so far this season, so I've been getting a bit of stick from the boys. It's nice to score a try and obviously it's special against your former club.”

“Kicking is something that I back myself on 100%. I've done a lot of work here recently with our skills coach Andy Holloway and he's tweaked a few little things, so I'm feeling good.

“I didn't strike the first kick too well, but it's just important to forget about it and move on to the next one. After that, you just get into the swing of things and everything flows.''
