Twickenham MP Tania Mathias has joined others in voicing concerns about David Cameron’s honours list, which included his wife’s stylist and many Remain campaigners.

Prime Minister Theresa May refused to block the list after Mr Cameron’s decision to propose rewards for more 40 allies led to calls for an overhaul of the system.

Dr Mathias said on BBC’s The World at One show the fact that her non-political friends have to ask why somebody gets an honour makes her nervous and the questioning around the latest list made her “sad for politics.”

She said: “And the contrast is when people in the community have had honours, nobody ever asks why – it’s usually, ‘Wow, how amazing and well-deserved.’

“So that part of the honours system I would want to keep, because it’s so precious. The contrast is this questioning that is coming up today, and that makes me sad for politics.”
